What is Foster Care?

Fostering is about providing care and support for children and young people who need a safe, stable and secure family environment when they are no longer able to live with their birth family. This may be on a short term basis of a few weeks or months, or potentially for many years. Together with support from Progress you can make an invaluable difference to the lives of vulnerable children and young people as a foster carer. The duration of each fostering placement varies depending on the individual circumstances of each child. Progress can offer a variety of placement options:

Short Term Care
This can be anything from a few days to a few months; often placements are required on the same day or with little notice.

Long Term Care
Offering a child or young person a long term, stable home environment which is usually a pre-planned placement.

Respite Care
A familiar place for a child to stay, on a short term basis, enabling the parent/foster carer to take a break or holiday.

Solo Care
Specially trained carers offering extra support and supervision for a child or young person with specific needs.

Complex Needs and Disability Care
Supporting children with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, sensory impairments or a combination of disabilities.

Mother and Baby Placements
Stable, safe and supportive environment promoting and developing parental skills of mothers and their babies.

Sanctuary Seeking Children and Young People
Offering unaccompanied, asylum seeking children and young people a stable family environment.
